Cup of Jones - 04/18/16

Happy Monday, everyone! This week I answer questions about our enigmatic finances and ponder what's better - a garage or a studio? We continue to have incredible numbers and consistent growth, so thank you! Check out our newest shows and ask questions below if there's anything you'd like to know.

Cup of Jones - 04/18/16

Comments

Hey Brandon, Not to dig up the ghosts of websites past, but I always wondered why GT decided to move away from the category based system of reviewing games (Story, Gameplay, Graphics etc). Did you consider bringing it back with EA Reviews?

Cash

Brandon, I do have a question. I think it would be interesting to see some of the Easy Allies do a face off. For instance on YouTube I have seen gamers do races. I would like to see Kyle Bosman and Michael Huber go head to head in a gaming race. Like who could beat the original Duck Tales first in one sitting. Any chance any one of the guys are going to do that?

Hey Brandon, any chance of more Don's Design Lab? Loved that show

Hey Brandon, I'm a bit late with this comment but I just wanted to say thanks for answering the studio question, I feel like I have a better unstanding at least, of why you want a space. I can definately see the advantages of having some of you guys all in the one place all day, just in terms of communaction if nothing else. Just on the piont you were making about having your own set and being able to set up multiple camera angles etc., I know you guys always prided yourselfes on having a high level of production at GT, I think most of us realize that this may not be poosible in some respects now, due to budget/equipment and location (none of this is to say that production has been bad by any means, the reviews have been first class and I like many other like the cosy feel of the garage.) and when it comes to guests, while it certainly would be nice to be able roll out the red carpet for Shu, I think the way games media has changed in the last few years, I think guests in genral are more accepting of going to someones house to be on a podcasts or an interview etc., I believe Kinda Funny often has guests over to there place (including Shu, I think) and it seems to work out for them. Anyway I don't want it to sound like I'm against an office, I'm not, I'm just wary of it being a big expense for you guys and just wondered if a bit more cautious approach of build a set at your garage, might be better at least at first. That said I know what it's like to have your work right next to your house and even though you say you can lock it up at night and forget about it, it's never that easy when it's right there. :D As always anything I say comes from a good place, got nothing but love for you all and just want to see you succeed. :) P.S. about the volume of questions, I think it's only natural for people to have a lot a first but i feel like it will settle down itself soon enough.

BeatenDownBrian

Puppets!! Hey Brandon I think Easy Allies need more puppets and or maybe a EA puppet show don't you think? Thank You for not giving up and turning what had to be a very crappy situation into the awesomeness that EA is.

Hi Brandon! I was wondering if the Allies have/would consider including multiple perspectives in reviews? For example "Some of us at EZA enjoyed X mechanic while others found it jarring". For me EZA is all about the fantastic team you guys have and I think this might be a way to accentuate it in reviews. I understand it makes things more difficult logistically, but even a quick aside or something small would maybe be enough. Or maybe you'd just like to keep that sort of stuff to editorials. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Hey Jones, will there a forum on the new website you all are working on? I think it would be great if we all could have a chance to interact with all of the Easy Allies crew. I used to really appreciate how you all would respond to comments under the videos on the GT site. Like I remember how Bloodworth would defend some of his reviews, or explain why he wouldn't mention certain things in his reviews (like Need for Speed 2015 for example). I mean, it's great that you and Kyle read our comments here on Patreon and then mention them in a few of the videos, but a forum would be more of a chance to have a back and forth dialogue with you all.

hey Brandon, i think all allies should have a official eza email accounts, so we can write to them some more personal stuff/letters/whatever. can u make this happen? it will be better for some issues than just write a comment on yt/patreon etc

Hey Brandon, so pleased you guys are making a success of this. Are you starting to get any support from the games industry? For example, will review copies be sent to you, have the PR teams and developers begun to reach out and help you with content?

Wow you really want to stir the pot with negativity like that? Too early for that nonesense.

Hey Brandon, If you cannot reach the studio goal before E3, have you thought about using the Youtube Space? I am not sure how it personally works, but you would be eligible and I think everyone would love to see you in a studio location for your glorious E3 reactions.

I am with you. Having more transparency about the numbers would make me feel a lot better about pledging larger amounts. I am also new to Patreon and I have made an interesting observation; Patrons are made to feel invested in the company by the amount they give each month with the reward tiers. But unlike actual investors, no business plan or financial data are expected to be released. The pledges amount to little more than donations and therefor accountability for the money raised is greatly restricted. I do find 200k to be ridiculously excessive, but at the same time I absolutely trust that Brandon's heart is in the right place. Am I the only one who feels stuck between a rock and a hard place?

Hey Brandon, I love your Disney artwork. Is there any ideas to have a community day where LA based Patreon supporters can say hi, thank you for everything and exchange a few words?

Hey Brandon are going to get a MCN for your YouTube? Or do you want to keep that independent too?

Dylan Wiggan

Mostly, I am curious to see what this becomes. I don't mind paying to support an entity, but I am definitely looking for more new, opinion, or discussion related services. As soon as possible, try to create a centralized location that can ink to the various items as they become available - free, low paid tier, higher paid tiers, etc. The comments on Patreon can easily become fractured because of the different price tiers and a forum without some type of Patreon linking ends up becoming its own thing, too. Otherwise, you guys likely know about all the other income sources - YouTube, Twitch, various streaming sites, advertisements, merchandise, etc. I don't buy a lot of merchandise, but stuff that can be gaming or genre themed (without running afoul of copyright) will be much more appreciated than just having gear that says "EZA." Keep it up. Don't jump the gun with crazy early expansion. Recognize Boz's greatness. Question all things Huber.

I would love that!

Hey Brandon, in case you meant me with "freeze", my nickname is actually written with an y :) But don't worry, it's alright. I appreciate your honesty and your answers make sense to me. If you are going the office route I would like it to be cozy and unique, please no generic / bland office space. We will get there!

I would love to see a format similar to last years live streams during the E3 pressers. They were awesome. Would love to see something like that or even better back for this years gaming mecca.

Gibbo

Two things. One, can we get a forum that can include everyone outside of patreon? Two, do you guys plan to set up a PO box or anything so you can showcase fan art or whatever ridiculous things people want to send EZA?

I just went from ''GameTrailers is....DEAD?!?!" to "Where will I hear Brandon Jones voice voicing trailers now?' to ''GT is reaaaaaaaaaaally DEAD!!!!! :( '' to ''I must find out more about this on the news'' to ''DAMN IT'S REAL'' to ''MUST FIND BRANDON JONES'' to ''Oh look a twitter acc...oh wait there is a VIDEO REVIEW'' to ''EZA???'' to ''Patreon?'' to ''Here's a buck for now'' to ''Cup of Jones, with Brandon Jones!!!'' to ''HAPPY!!'' to ''and also happy to see the others as well, including the one that writes the reviews, the one that says lots of things about video games as well as the one that also helped during trailer scores as well as all the others that are AWESOME!'' to ''Oh, and my comment after watching Cup of Jones is that you should definitely somehow find a way so that EVERYONE that liked GT and you guys know that you guys are doing this''. Nuf said! P.S.: Yes, I just noticed today that GT was dead.

chocolate_prophet

The one thing I feel the Easy Allies is really lacking with right now, is an actual place for the Easy Allies community to congregate (outside of Patreon). Whether it's a message board or a Facebook (maybe Reddit) group, I want to make some friends with fellow supporters and keep the conversation going. Cup of Jones, the EZA Podcast, Easy Update, are highlights of my week and I want someone to hype EZA with me. Get SOMETHING going. w/love & respect - Thomas Rogers

I would like to see a goal around including women and/or minority members in the cast, if even just for one show (podcast?). I love you guys, but I think diversity improves content.

Brandon, now that easy allies has a more relaxed and structure less hierarchy do you worry about small power struggles in the group? I only ask because I have worked on many small and large creative endeavors and sometimes when people aren't sure about the structure people will get upset when one person does or doesn't "carry their weight". Not saying that is happening I just know it's possible. Has this been something you've discussed with the group, especially if things move forward financially in the future? Thank you!

Colin Cooper

An office would definetly be a more focused, less cluttered environment with a less sweaty cluttered vibe to it. Just please for the love of god get one with windows! That box they put you all in before the GT shutdown was depressing as hell to look at.

Pachter came back with a different channel/site. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEKvNTcBdHEScVKK90pw9JKZdee6K-TBt

Is Mr. Keighly (spelling?) going to help EZA or is he already? He seemed to be closely associated with GT. Can he lend his star power? Would Mr. Pachter be interested in bringing Pach Attack back?

A question here, don't know if it's been asked if so I apologise for it in advance. Hi Jones, As a great fan, like many others who followed GT I have a really important question for you. Can you please confirm that "Mr Buttons" will be joing ESA, especially on E3 (and more)? Also, will you be live streaming again for E3 (Youtube, Twitch...)? Thanks for your time! Axel (Flanders, Belgium)

I like this show, haven't missed an episode yet. For E3, I'd like to see Bosman or Huber surprise us with a big interview like that time Kyle interviewed Shuhei in his hotel room.

Could new people be getting their own shows. Maybe a Ian and Bradley Lore show. Idk just a thought. :)

Will you guys consider making more comedic merchandise. I love what kinda funny does with portillo the dog. Maybe Sophie has a future in modeling lol

Are you guys reviewing star fox zero?

Daniel Murray

Another good thing about having an office: having an address we can use to mail you stuff different than the place you live. Cups, I want to send cups...

Agreed. Youtube and other channels are casual and having something a little more proper can set apart the tone and quality of the shows.

Zugdar

Where are you getting all those cups/mugs/chalices/drinking receptacles?

I really enjoyed the first episode of Brandon Plays Pokemon. It's really interesting to see someone play a well established franchise for the first time and give their thoughts. Are there other games that you would consider playing that could end up being future "Brandon Plays" videos? Or do you see this as more of a one and done series? Also it was great meeting you at PSN last year!

I think the stage idea is the way to go if possible. I get why people like the casual, garage vide but I think the quality of the shows and the streams would go way up if everyone had a dedicated space to record and stream from.

I really like your Pokémon journey show! Any chance of doing more sit-downs like this or starting a show similar to just played? That was one of my favorites! It was nice to hear about what the team was playing recently, especially if it was something that was older or wasn't getting much coverage or reviews. I think you had an excellent format/style with just played as well! Immensely prefer this kind of unscripted content to streams.

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this but can I expect to see and pre-recorded let's plays? I saw the Brandon plays Pokemon and for some reason was very disappointed by the end when I realized that I won't be watching Brandon actually PLAY Pokemon with Kyle by his side. I know you guys stream but honestly the production quality and feel of streams feels inferior for a game like this. You can always play a few hours at a time and cut it into 30 minute chunks. If it's a problem with not being able to capture footage from a 3ds I guess I understand... Rant over.

Spencer Pilon

I really like the longer episodes!

Hi Brandon! As a huge Disney Fan, I always love seeing the painting of Mickey Painting Walt in the background of a lot of the EZA streams/shows. I have a statue of it myself. The painting is so symbolic of how just as the creator influences the creation, the creation influences the creator back in amazing ways. In what ways do you see EZA (the Patreon, company, etc) influencing the allies in the coming months? In what ways do you see us, the viewers, influencing you? PS, Cup of Jones has become one of my favorite things of the week!

Dale Payne

Here is the link to the Reddit Page with the bets being tracked https://www.reddit.com/r/UneasyAlliance/wiki/bets

Dale Payne

you mentionned that tabletop escapades was shot all in one chunk for the month, could having the full video on patreon be a backer reward?

havik

Hey Brandon , just want to say thank you for answering my merchandise question last week. You don't know how surprised and excited i got seeing my name up there. But my main topic...you are doing a similar coverage of E3 like you did last year? Have you gone MAD Man? Don't get wrong nothing was more amazing than seeing Kyle, Huber, and Brad react to FF7 remake, Last Guardian, and Shenmue 3. But that seems kinda crazy to do it again. I wish you the best of luck with E3 closing in very soon. (E3 of Dreams Come True part 2)

Bryan Flynn for the Win!

Enjoyed watching you play Red Dead. I really liked how you were in character too. Hope you do the same on your next stream as well :-)

Brandon, have you guys thought about making appearances at conventions in the future?

Juan Morales

Hey Brando Calrisian, what is the status of Easy Allies and media passes? Will you all be able to get passes for TGS, E3, etc? Darren Mifsud.

Darren Mifsud

If you did get sponsorship deals outside of Patreon, would that contribute towards the same goals you've listed here?

Minamik

Brandon, are any of you guys going to E3 this year?

Derrick DesRoches

There's a huge dynamic of being in a personal space with friends versus "being at work". I can appreciate both, but you made some pretty big points with having a neutral space for guests and for focus. I'd almost recommend renting an apartment but I forgot that the property values are complete skookum out there

Cup of Jones is stated to release on Mondays but releases typically Tuesday on the east coast. Have you considered shooting on Sunday instead to release earlier on Monday or change the expected date to Tuesday?

Have you guys considered bringing on guests to the Easy Allies podcast just like kinda funny does

Brandon, you should check out LinusTechTips on youtube. Very similar story of just a small group of guys that started shooting videos in Linus's garage, rented a house for awhile, and just this past year or so moved into a dedicated studio space. Also, regarding working from home, I worked in an office for 6 years, at home for the past 4 years, and just started going back into the office this month. You are absolutely right about the pros and cons of working at home. Most important thing is to still get out and socialize so you don't feel like your world has gotten smaller.

Gaming Groove

Brandon, you still commute, but its just 15 feet.

We keep seeing all the awesome stuff around your office / filming area, any chance we could get a tour of all the video game paraphernalia you have collected up on the walls and shelves?

Lee Hinman

Brandon you look tired. Getting enough sleep man?

Rory McGuire

I also really like the show. It's a different vibe than the rest of the shows and streams in my opinion and I really love that. Also reacting to a lot of comments and talking about things that happen behind the scenes sort of gives me the feeling that all the patrons and allies are all a part of this amazing easy allies movement. I'm dreaming with you Jones, for that studio, and otherwise, it's still going to be great to have easy allies E3 coverage in the garage. Looking forward to Huber freaking out about Shenmue gameplay!

Backlog Crusader

Keep E3 exactly the same as last year!! It was so good.

Also a comment specific to this show, I really, really like this show. I think you've done something different to any other show being made by you guys by letting us know a bit more about what's going on and answering questions about the Easy Allies and being so honest and open. I think it's a perfect show for you as the head of the group and it's nice to get a Brandon show.

Also in regards to everyone working on this full time, as much as I'd love that, as long as you guys can keep up with the stuff you have going now I'll always be happy. Very, very happy with your return. I haven't been disappointed in the slightest. I'm actually planning on upping my pledge once I start my new job.

I think the Pokemon show is such a good idea. Just getting to see someone who has never played such an iconic game getting to discuss it in depth with someone like Kyle who loves the franchise is so interesting.

Don't feel 20 minutes is too long for an episode. I found it really interesting!

I also would like some info on Don Casanova.

Daniel Ray

You guys really should put this episode public - just this one. It's great advertisement for how the company runs, its future plans and how closely connected to the community you guys are. It would likely attract more Patreons

Samuel Justice

What's in the cup?

Have you considered a $100/month pledge level? The jump from $50 to $200 seems steep, and I'm sure at least some of the $50 patrons wouldn't mind bumping it up a bit.

Walker Hope

I disagree that an office would be a good use of money at this point. Perhaps if you were pulling in close to 100 grand a month, there would be enough money to make this sort of investment, but with such a small monthly income, it would be better to invest that in making more content. You might have a less impressive work setting, but your Patrons are find with that. There's no inherent need for the office at this point, and like so many startups who worked out of their garage, you should wait until you have much more income before you create a dedicated office for your operations.

Another great episode! Took away a lot of concerns we had. I'm really rooting for that HQ!

Henk Groenendijk

Don't try to go shorter, please, I like your Cup long.

Leif

Shuhei Yoshida. Google him, because he's wonderful.

Doug S

Have you ever lived in LA? Ain't cheap. jk

Daniel Ray

"Shoo(?) Yehushida's(?) coming to town..." Who?

Question for you, Mr Jones. I really enjoyed the Fiasco episodes of Tabletop Adventures, it gave a break to the DnD and also let you see other members of the team. Would you guys ever consider doing a Once a Month Fiasco group, with rotating members?

Much appreciated.

I also really, really appreciate that you were upfront and honest with how much you would need a month, something that you might consider a touchy subject, which comes out to $2.4 million a year. That seems excessive to me because there are nine of you and that comes out to over 250 grand a person. I know there are other expenses, but that still seems like a lot.

"I can afford to be full-time." So what was the final sale price for GameTrailers to Viacom? The high six figures or the low seven figures?

Great show Jones! When will Don Casanova be done with his secret mission and join you guys?

This is one of my new favorite shows. Thx for the honesty and insights.

Mathieu Vanhove

You mentioned before how you regret not putting yourself out there more, when you were with the old company... Now that you're making that effort get in front of the camera more, how does it feel?? Personally i feel like we know you much better now, or atleast know more about you. This show is great btw

It's always great to start your day with a cop of coffee, and a cup of Jones

Thore Dørup

Thank you for the update!

P.Visser

Talking really straightforward about important stuff as always.

Poololo

This show is so great to start the day with a cup of coffee, it gets good vibes going for the whole day.

Length is no problem yet! These 20 minutes just flew past. If it would start to reach 30 I'd be more concerned but right now there's no rush.

Benny Samuelsson

Are you going to have a new cup/mug every week on this show? I liked the mug from the second episode the most so far. ~ usak90

Yeah - getting a studio / office makes sense, look forward to seeing that come to fruition.

alan roosen

Hi Brandon - great work. I love your "Cup of Jones" segment. Glad to hear you will be covering E3. thanks for all the great work.

If you're shaking up the merch don't lose the coffee cup! I haven't picked one up yet. Also, I'm very interested in checking out your pokemon playthrough show. I never played or care to play pokemon, but if a grown ass man like you can pick it up all these years later and find some enjoyment I'll have to give it a shot!

Question and a suggestion. 1) Could you give us the opportunity to vote on future "Full Playthrough" games? 2) I absolutely loved "Don's Design Lab". I would really like that type of concept (one EZA member makes a level, others try to get through it) to return. It could be a (monthly) show or even an occasional part of Tuesday's Group Stream.... Love and Respect.

the_finnish_ally

Hi Brandon, I would be happy to volunteer time to help out with the website. I'm a 12 year veteran and currently run 400 professional websites. Please let me know how I can help, even if it is just consulting.

Tyler Travis

Hey Jones, what are the chances of seeing the return of a Don's Design Lab type show? Give me a 1% at least.

Marble Match

I think it would be cool if Patreon backers got the full Tabletop video that way the people who want to watch that entire episode in one sitting they can and for the people who enjoy the cut up parts can still enjoy the cut up parts.

God I'm so hype for the Pokemon show!

Olf Himself

Now that is the cup of a carpenter. Mighty fine Cup of Jones!

Neale Genereux

Hey Brandon! Is there anything else that the patrons can do to help you guys other than financially? I'm a designer by trade and make graphics, videos, and websites and would love to help any way I can.

Jesse Freeman

Hurray for not driving to work! So happy for all of you that this is working. All the best to everyone.

Hey Brandon, could you add a schedule for the shows and reviews (if possible) you're doing each week?

Olivier

Reposting my silly question from last week: "Silly questions for the next CoJ: How many cups do you have?... XD Will some cup reappear later or you'll keep buying a new one until the end of times?... XD Thanks and congratulations for the success of this project. :)" PS: Sorry for the typos/gramatic errors/etc. not my first language and is a little difficult to write something decent... xD

Wait, so your telling me there is now going to be a weekly episode of Brandon talking to Kyle about his Pokemon Red experience?! Life is too good.

I love the Cup of Jones show, when it see it's posted I can't wait to watch it the following morning. I'm just throwing this out there with a wild idea! What if EZA had a second Patreon called EZA HQ and it had goals in creating a new Headquarters, each goal would have things like: Office space, Podcast set, Twitch Garage set etc. With two different revenue streams you could use one for the office and the first one, this one for the shows and employees. I don't know how this stuff works honestly I'm just throwing it out there. I am having a blast watching EZA grow from week to week and I love being able to witness the beginning. Thanks!

Jason Walstrom

This js my Tuesday morning show. I save it for my commute to my Work Shop. You guys definitely need an office. One needs to be able to separate work from home (more than 15 feet). Also, as cute as the gamer garage/couch is, I personally enjoyed the GT Time set with the raised table/ round table discussion effect where people could look eachother in the eye and talk back and forth. As mentioned also a better setup for guests.

Impact93 (Jon)

I want you guys to do whatever it is that you want to do. It's your company! Not ours. I think companies do the best when they have full creative liberties, so I just want to help fund. However, one aspect about the garage is that it makes it feel as if you're talking to me, whereas on a stage it makes it feel like you're talking to us. It's a subtle difference, but feeling as if we're on the couch with you is always a fun feeling. So if and when you go to the office, would be cool if that feeling could somehow be captured.

The long episodes are actually quite nice. Only criticism I have for you this week is that this episode is a Brandon Jones spoiler joint. Would've rather not seen the names of your Pokémon team until I was watching that first video. Just footage or b-roll of you talking to Kyle would've sufficed there. Seen multiple people now who were confused, thinking that video was already out and they just missed when it was uploaded. Understand and am happy that you're excited about it, just in the future if you're promoting videos that aren't up like that, be more clear about that and try not to show too much. That said, excited to see that video, and I applaud you for taking it seriously.

MBUN

Wait, where is this pokemon video? I can't find it.

You rule! I love this show! It reminds me of Pach-attacks (which I also used to watch diligently on GT). Obvious the content is totally different but it has that vibe to it - I love it! Keep up the great work Mr Jones!

Hey Jones, we love long episodes! Don't worry about that! Working on an office really has its benefits, as you pointed out. By the way, I'm glad you mentioned EZA's initial E3 plans and, as someone who started following you guys at Gametrailers after the E3 2015 shows, I think we would be fine with a E3 Press Conference reactions livestream. No need to go fancier than that for now.

Hey Brandon, are you going to catch em all?

Brandon has previously called himself the "Editor-in-chief" of Easy Allies. So yeah he is "The Boss" if you want to call it that. Allthough I think things are much different now than before since there is now corporate upper management like at Defy

Casper Andersen

Very good editorial about the work space. I hope you get it :|

Mikko Koponen

As I understand it, Twitch takes a much larger piece of the pie than if you donate on Patreon.

Twitch subscriptions are 100% profit for Easy Allies too

Joe Rutski

SAVINGS! Oops, I didn't even think about that! Glad to hear you guys have such a handle on the business side of things and thanks for letting us know about it. Love the show, length is perfect.

Isaac King

maybe a musical EZA for the 40 k stretch goal

Hey Jones, are you thinking about adding in any user / fan content (i.e. videos)? It could help pad out a schedule if you guys are having a slow week....

Answered on a previous episode: coffee or water.

iconmaster

Hi Brad, is it hard for you to not work "Overtime" since you work so near to your home? Greetings from germany.

What's in the "Cup of Jones"?

Zugdar

Are you guys planning on sending anyone to the E3 show floor?

Dustin McNab

Mr. Jones, great episode this week. Thanks for being clear on finances. Something that you're talking about recently leads to my question for this week: The EZA website. Will you continue to provide updates on how its coming along? I keep forgetting that a website is coming until I hear you mention it so this is a great place to get caught up. Also, do you have a timetable when you will announce the first retro? Just curious. Keep up the great work!

Brandon K Gann

I got some credit (blame?) for some stuff I didn't ask this week, but it's cool with me, as the questions were all informative. Just want to apologize if I stole someone else's credit for their question! I got one question in this week but somehow got cited as the source for three, and I apologize to fellow commenters if I got cited for YOUR questions. Thank you once again Brandon for your incredible openness and time!

Doug S

Great shows all across the board! Just curious but what is the current managerial hierarchy at Easy Allies? Or is there even one?

Are you "The Boss" of Easy Allies? What has changed from your GT Management days?

Mikehook1

100% behind you getting an office and a stage. That is what i loved about the old podcast how professional it was and that you had tvs that showed what segment you was talking about. So go for it and can not wait to see it. Like you said in earlier videos it was much easier putting vidoes together when you was all in one place.

Great video again Brandon, I had a question! Will EZA be participating in cross outlet charity initiatives such as TakeThis streamathons and Operation Supply Drop? I think your audience would be able to help out these kind of charities immensely, since the beauty-bois are all such wonderful people

The Hashtagonist

Haha, oh man I am incredibly excited for that Pokémon show.

For the 40k stretch goal can you guys please cover or make a music dance video to Backstreet Boys "I Want It That Way"? Thanks,

I want longer episodes, certainly not shorter. I do like the garage setting, but a studio is fine too. At least shoot one show in there if you build a new place.

I think you should mention to people asking about the costs for each person working full time how much it costs to live in California. I live in Indiana and bringing in around $2500 a month is a decent living wage. Had I not been aware of the difference in cost of living here compared to where you guys are, I would think that the current Patreon amount would be more than enough to support all of you.

Jeremy

They started doing that latter in the year, but can't talk about what they do this year.

Ibrahim Sozer

I know I'm showing total business naivety but I'll ask anyway as I'm genuinely interested by the numbers. How does employing 10 people require $200,000 a month? I know this is more of a general question than specifically one for the Allies (so hopefully someone with business knowledge can answer) but even with overheads I can't see how each person costs $20,000/m. My point of reference here is that the average salary (2015 in the UK) (so probably a useless comparison lol) is around $3063pm (before tax and health/NI is removed). The employer pays approx $3809pm. I know salaries are probably much higher than this in California (I'm a game developer and I have heard developers get paid far better out there) but genuinely interested - are higher wages and private health care the main issue bringing that up by another $15K+/m per employee? Sorry if any of this comes across wrongly. I genuinely am interested and only wish the best for you all. When I saw this reach $30K/m I figured it'd mean full time was covered (especially with the low cost of no office space etc) and sad to see we're a long way off that (though I've got my fingers crossed for those corporate meetings and back door shady deals). Anyway really happy with the content you guys have been making and it's been more than enough to make me confident and content with the channel.

Thanks for the update Brandon. I know it can be uncomfortable and I realize there are some things you just can't talk about, but I appreciate seeing insight into the business side of EZA. We're all here because we love games (and love the way you all love games), but understanding how you all work is interesting at least to me. I guess I have a two things currently on my mind, maybe either of them will pique your interest. First, obviously you all have your origins doing high quality video content, but now that you're EZA and unchained from that previous name, is there any desire to move outside of the video-only realm? I think the video review system is golden and hope you always keep that up, but has there ever been any desire to include e.g. written posts that either expand on the video content, focus in on specific topics that aren't worth a video, or act as a blog-type platform for the various Allies? I know Patreon to some extent includes that, but is that something you (or the others) want to expand at all? I don't know if you need it or anything, it's just something I'd been wondering since I know the previous name sometimes felt like an anchor to you all. My other question is more towards community interaction. Obviously you had the D&D reward for fans, you have some on-stream interactions with fans through chat or through some random games, and of course questions for the various talk shows. Do you or any of the other allies have any other ways you want to interact with the fanbase, patrons or otherwise? Again this isn't something I'm saying you necessarily need, you guys are already great to the fanbase, take tons of feedback etc. I'm just curious if you guys have ideas for integrating fan content into shows, featuring fan creations, whatever. Last time I used the example of having a fan spot on a hypothetical countdown (though I understand those are not on the table at the moment, just an example) and IINM in the past people brought up the idea of having a fan team for podcast bets. Are there things like that that you couldn't do in the past but want to now?

RDR cannot be staged!

I don't think they imagined anybody handing them more than 500 dollars monthly ^^. It is a lot more grounded than having an empty 3.000 segment like some other popular patreon. At that point can it even be a person giving that money? Must be a sponsor company. But yeah since the high tier is full maybe a new tier would be introduced, along with the 100$ segment which a couple of people (rich for 50$ and poor for 200$) seems to want.

Is it possible to include conference audio in this years e3 streams? Felt something was missing when I watched your guys last year. Example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnXluCNljX0

OneGamerPunch

This sell me the game you like in one take idea sounds great!

I was unsure about whether you really needed a studio, but after this episode I'm totally sold on the idea. You can't exactly invite Miyamoto round your house if he's in town, as much as you would probably like to! Keep up the good work - loving all the stuff you have all produced so far!

Where do you get all of your music for these shows? Fan created? Ally created? Purchased from somewhere like soundcloud? Can fans submit music? Great job with the show, as always!

Do you have any intensions of expanding the staff of easy allies in any point in the future?

Would love to know that as well. Might have heard wrong but Brannon made it sound like the video was already up

Sebastian Mauritzell

Important quetion that needs answering.

This show is staight up awesome

I feel you on the editorial. I'm a freelancing journalist editor and mainly working from home. I like going to the office a few days a week. The structure makes me work slightly more efficient, but otherwise working at home rules!

ONE SIMPLE QUESTION. is Buttons going to return for E3? thanks!!

Otoshigami

She was just wanting attention in front of the camera. :P

Otoshigami

I like how lightning is stalking from behind the chair. :)

I don't think kinda funny as being the highest despite 2 patron count because the 2nd patreon look like a SIDE PROJECT as in OPTIONAL project that people want to back it or not.

I think those people that are telling you that they'd prefer the garage to a stage are simply comfortable with the familiarity of it. It's only been a month, but there are already a substantial amount of good memories and good times that have accumulated in it. I hold the same feelings regarding the stage where you guys shot GT Time and GT Live for years, not to mention E3. So, when you get a new stage, it'll be a blank slate that, over time, will be as fondly remembered. Though I'd imagine the garage wouldn't go away anyway, perhaps being a convenient streaming space for you, personally. The decor suits Red Dead Redemption Revisited! I'm also very happy with the length of these videos! If anything, giving more editorial and less answering-feedback would be great. So far, the editorials have been all about the Easy Allies operation, but I'd like to see you explore new topics relevant to the gaming industry as a whole if there's nothing EZA-related to address.

I was wondering the same thing!

It's Tuesday mornings here for me but I love consuming Cup of Jones in the A.M. with a cup of feel good. Also, dig the rotation of cups.

Any chance we'll see fanart competitions to build up the merch catalog? I'm no artist myself, so this isn't a question for me, but I feel a great way to really build the variety of available merch designs would be with maybe some kind of contest to motivate some of the more artistically oriented fans of EZA to make some really cool/hip shirt designs. Just a thought.

Jones just how many cups do you have? Is the Patreon helping in expand your collection?

I think, as the community seems to agree, that it was a good choice to split up the streaming archive with the shows into two separate chanels. For me this is because I prefer generally edited content. On this note I'd still be really interested in seeing a summarised version/retrospective of your playthrough streams. When you mentioned your Red Dead Revisited stream, my ears pricked up. It would be cool to have 'short' summary of your thoughts on you playthrough once you are through, what do you think?

For the E3 coverage, I loved the last year's. Especially the Sony conference video, meltdown included. And as always, great Cup of Jones.

Are there any plans to do something on the monthly anniversary of the EZA? I think something like outakes would be really cool, I heard something somewhere of outakes from your old voice over sessions and thought they were really funny. Loving all the work you guys are doing, keep it up. Love and respect!

Are the allies "happier" now than with GT? On screen you're as good as ever, but I was wondering if behind the scenes, the financial situation and extra jobs has taken a toll on some of you?

Man, this show is so incredible. Don't make it shorter, Brandon, make it longer! Or just do what you want with it; that has worked pretty brilliantly so far. I just want you to know how much this frank, honest approach means to me. I love how upfront you guys are. Please keep that alive as much as humanly possible. Anyway, you guys are really doing a great job. I am incredibly happy with what I have seen so far. Great work!

James Kennedy

where can I watch Kyle and Brandon talking about pokemon?

you have so many good cups!

Love & Respect shirts!

Not sure if you'd want to share this info, but I'd be interested to know how many subscriptions you've lost. You mentioned a few weeks ago there was some loss following the first subscription collection from patrons.

Health insurance. I love you Jones, well done my friend.

Please keep your overheads as low as possible! We want you guys to keep doing what you are doing for as long as possible! Too many companies expand too quickly and suffer for it.

Barnstar

Great episode! Loving what you guys are doing so far.

Barnstar

Great episode. About E3, just do streams of every event like last year, but please implement event stream to Your stream, otherwise it's hard to watch both at the same time archived on twitch.

Wanted to thank you for reading my long winded post. I felt out of line commenting on finances, especially since I'm 100% satisfied with the content you guys are putting out, and think you guys are actually exceeding expectations given how you just barely launched. Plus I'm just looking from the outside, and don't have all the relevant info. My post was done with good intentions though, as I really want you guys to succeed and grow. I'll trust that you guys know what is best for the company and direction. I am so impressed by how honest and up front you guys are and that you are even willing to read posts from idiots like myself. I will continue to support you guys no matter what. As a side note, Cup of Jones is actually one of the best things about Easy Allies. It's just a great show (separate of the parts where you address fans). Keep up the good work Jones! The crew is obviously in good hands with you at the lead.

That's why BJs the boss!

Agree, agree and agree! Great episode

How and who gets to choose who gets full time?

Andrew Chalmers

the ROAD to 50K before E3 is just the beginning. we need to SPREAD THE WORD HARD AND FAST to make the dream happen. this is our EZ MISSION. pure and simple. :)

Otoshigami

Fantastic episode! I really appreciated you giving us some down to earth actual reasonable numbers about what it would take to bring EZA to the same level as GT was. At the same time, it's awesome that we are able to get the level of content we have as it is:) great work, and add me to those who want CoJ to stay around 20-25 min, don't shorten it! It's great at its current length. Thanks!

The betting page Brandon was talking about is on the EZA wiki, found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/UneasyAlliance/wiki/bets

I really enjoy the longer vids because it's a more intimate one on one with only us. I appreciate that a lot Brandon. God bless

Hi, Cool setup and wish you guys awesome times ahead. My Question - Have you guys thought of an yearly subscription plan (alongside the monthly)

Another late night shoot? =] Appreciate the hard work and I'm happy to support you guys. Also, any chance we could get a video tour of the garage? We've seen it from a couple different angles, but I'd love to see how it all fits together.

Betting special: Wouldn't it be great if the community could make bets, too? Maybe Bosman v Huber v Community or even everybody in the community individually against each other?

Brandon that was an awesome episode and very informative. i do agree that having an office/studio is just as important. and LOL at the shoutout to Shuhei Yoshida. He is an actual patreon EZA mention it on his tweet when you guys launch last month. Hope the partnership and sponsors work out

At $37,000/m Easy allies already has the highest earnings out of all the Patreons in the top 50. Do you really think it's feasible that the $50,000 goal can be achieved with one page? Kinda Funny would technically be the highest if you merged their two pages. Do you think you guys could create and justify a second Patreon page? Not sure what the point of it would be, but it seems like the office would be out of reach for a long time unless you guys get another big revenue source. However, I know you're in no rush to get to that end goal for the time being, so for now just keep up the good work!

Ben Metal

is that Pokemon show going up tonight?

choco factory

Brandon, random question, but would you consider naming the garage Shiba House...? When retrospectives return, will you be tying up any loose ends like Diablo, or starting anew with series you haven't covered before. Will you do retrospectives on series you've done before like Resident Evil, since they have had a lot of new entries since the initial retrospective?

Daniel Wong

Why don't you have higher tiers on Patreon?

Chad Ball

It's morning here in Denmark. I'm having a cup of coffe and a cup of Jones. I don't usually take milk in my coffe, but this is a special occasion.

Good show Jones, really enjoying this weekly update. Do you guys have any collaborations in the pipeline?. I saw you on Kinda Funny before EZA started and It's a great way to spread the word about the new channel. If I could suggest one collaboration : get Bosman on Hot Pepper Gaming to review Riptide GP 2 😂

Adam Mullany

Cup of Jones has strangely become my favourite show to watch. It's oddly cathardic. Also, just to throw out some suggestions, easy allies tournament where u guys get real competitive and keep score. An editorial similar to just played, where an ally can talk about anything in entertainment that has grabbed their attention(TV, movies, anime, etc). And finally, maybe some community gaming events similar to the smash one, except pc as well(heroes of the storm perhaps)

Office life wasn't really your cup of Jones lol. Great update, great show thanks Brandon!

Really enjoying getting to hear about y'all's reasoning behind your decisions and plans! I've always appreciated the openness you all have had and it's what really set the crew apart from other game journalism sites (in my opinion at least). There's a genuineness to it that makes me confident in y'all's abilities and willing to sit back and enjoy the ride (wherever it may lead)! Can't wait to see what's next!

Great Cup of Jones. Very much appreciated.

have you thought of recreating your garage on a stage in said new office, when that comes? Similar to Wayne's World, where when the show was bought in the movie, the production company recreated Wayne's basement on the stage for them to shoot their show. Just a funny thought.

Bryce Ray Parker

How much have your connections and former partnerships from your time at GT helped you in starting and building up EZA? Also, how, at if at all, do the funds from non-Patreon sources impact the Patreon stretch goals? And don't shorten the show! Longer editorials if you have shorter feedback segments!

Joseph La Russa

It might help that goal if the $100 bracket previously mentioned were implemented faster.... I don't really care about getting anything else, but I know I can do more than $50 a month and the money is just sitting here for you to take EZA....

RE Tabletop Escapades length: I think making the episodes something like 2 hours would definitely be too hard on the guys, but I think 70-75 minute cuts would feel better than 60~ minute cuts. It feels like it cuts just *slightly* too short right now.

Don't worry about the length, make them longer if anything. Loved how long Frame Trap was. I got all excited for the Pokemon thing only to see it's not out yet. lol Can't wait for that! I think introductions could be a series in itself. Introduce a game you love to another Ally and see their take on it.

NeO JD

Good video as always Jones! While hearing your take on EZA's situation has been great, I wanted to hear your opinion on some more gaming stuff too! Are you going to talk about your opinions on things as well, or are you just saving that for the the weekly podcast?

Another good episode, Jones! Do you have any place where we could send you suggestions? Or is right here in the comments the place to do it? I have a couple of random suggestions. First, you sad you didn't want to make such a long Q&A. I don't think any of us mind how long it is. This is still the beginning of EZA, so why not make a separate video of entirely of just questions for now? When you make your site, you could even set up an email for us to direct all our comments and/or suggestions. Next is a show idea. I was trying to think of a show that would be easy to produce that you guys could do. That would require little to no cutting and also very little set up. And I though of one that might do the trick. An Easy Ally would sit in front of the camera (you rotate every week) and for 5,7, or etc minutes that person tries to sell the viewer a game of their choice. Like pitching a sale to us! Though it has to be from the heart, so one take only! I figured it would be fun of all of you to have a chance to talk about your favorite games with us and try to get us to buy it! And last I have a stream idea! Maybe you can consider having a monthly stream of the Playstation Plus game benefits? You could show off the games, and if we like them, we could download them! If you read all of this, thank you! Have a lovely day!

Parasitepaladin

Jones totally stole that cup from The Last Crusade!

the_finnish_ally

Can't wait for the Pokemon discussion!

Thanks for the update, Brandon!

Great episode Jones! Love hearing about easy allies behind the scenes. I had a question about future content. Would you ever consider doing shows/podcasts with special guests that are not easy allies (i.e. ex-gt staff like elyse, Shane Satterfield, Pachter...etc.)?

No! Don't make them shorter! I think the TV episode length of 22-25 ish minutes is perfect^^ Please, more Cups like these last two!

Just curious, do you plan on having different cups for every 'Cup of Jones'?

You're the business, Jones.

RoleMouse

Whoa, hold up, did I miss this Pokemon thing? Or is that dropping later this week?

Last time i asked before the show ending... Ugh. Answered @ 11:00

One can never get enough Jones!

Hi Brandon & Co, not sure if this question been asked or answered already but anyways: What are your guys plans for E3 this year? Super hyped.

Haahh love that creepy Lightning placement.

I chose....wisely.

Easy Allies

This is the cup of a carpenter!

Tokyo Slim

Thanks Jonesy!
