Newsletter: week of 3/17

Are there any Severance fans out there? Hannah and I stayed up late last night to watch the season finale, and wowee.

Because I have been building a lot of IKEA furniture lately, this has been my favorite thread to come out of the final episode so far:

In other news, this week felt oddly exciting for mid-March. Fujifilm released a new medium format, fixed-lens camera, Boston Dynamics gave us a new video of its Atlas Robot being eerily human, and Pebble is back! Plus, we celebrated the 16 years since Apple showed of Cut, Copy, & Paste in iPhoneOS 3.0. Here is everything else I was tuning into this week.

What I read this week:

McDonald’s Gives Its Restaurants an AI Makeover
How long till robots are also making the meals?

Sunset on the moon seen in spectacular images taken by Blue Ghost lander
After 14 days on the moon and carrying out 10 experiments, the lunar rover went silent 5 hours into the night after capturing a pretty sweet sunset shot.

Tesla recalls more than 46,000 Cybertrucks after trim starts falling off
I can't believe anyone bought this POS in the first place.

What I watched this week:

Someday, by Spike Jonze | AirPods 4
I love Pedro Pascal, but this has nothing on Spike Jonze's HomePod commercial with FKA twigs

A timelapse of dyeing the Chicago River green for the St. Patrick’s Day festivities
I can't believe they actually do this every year. Shout of the fish!

334 photos w/ Sony A7III --> 3D Gaussian Splat
Does anyone here do this sort of work? I have so many questions!

Who Created the First Sign Museum in New York City?
This is exactly the sort of video I would love to make someday--a little profile on a cool person doing cool stuff!

OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE
The amount of access Austin Augie can get is unreal, and it is on display in this video, where he explores Purim celebrations in one of Brooklyn's most closed-off Hasidic communities. Incredible photos as well!

Why I Surf the Cold PNW (yes, there's sharks)
Simply story, great shots.

What I listened to:

Bon Iver - If Only I Could Wait + Bon Iver - Walk Home
More new Bon Iver <3

Seasons (Waiting on You) - Future Islands
This might be a top 20 favorite song of all time for me.

Courtney Barnett - City Looks Pretty
My annual fall back in love with Courtney Barnett period is happening. Sorry in advance.

Okay, bud. That is all I have! Next week, I will have two videos(!!) for you, so pray for me as I spend endless hours tooling away. I hope you are well, wherever you are!

Comments

(severance spoilers) I find the discourse about that scene fascinating, some people genuinely thought Mark had trouble *assembling* the crib but as someone who's gone through the fertility treatment nightmare (we got lucky on our final attempt!), it was crystal clear it was his frustration at having to give up on the dream of having children - and the crib being chosen as the final test because it was the ultimate symbol of Gemma's ultimate trauma. For a second I thought they'd have something in it to symbolize the fetus she lost which would've been brutal 😬

Phil Knall

Woah! An Austin Augie shout out. I'm glad he's back putting out stuff on his channel.
