Just throwing this out as someone who has Synecdoche as my favourite film, only rivaled by The End of Evangelion, is that I believe it's also a critique from Kaufman about the way he views the world, and it was almost a cautionary tale for people (like me) who struggle with similar lifespans, and it led me onto a path on bettering myself, finding out I had ADHD, etc. For a tiny bit on what I wrote on it, which feels as rambling on trying to make sense of it: "As Caden tries to reach a level of perfection in his art, one that would not only get him praise from the people in his life that he seemingly keeps getting it denied from (Adele, his parents after seeing his play), but from himself, where nothing he will ever make will be good enough. The obsession starts to overtake him, the size of the play keeps getting bigger, what’s his personal life and what’s the play starts to blend together, what makes logical sense seems to go out the window, only to be viewed in a metaphorical lense. The same few concepts he’s has on the human condition (that we are all alone, that we can never be truly understood) get thrown around again and again. All of this until he is no longer himself in the traditional sense, he starts to play Ellen, but was he always Ellen, after all this, as he is dying in the arms of a practical stranger, never being able to complete his life-works from his own barriers and limitations, he thinks he finally has it, but he doesn’t. His overthinking led to all this, and stopped him from being able to fully enjoy life. Even with his metaphorical transformation, it’s still the same, old-self." "Apart from the criticism that it is “too weird” (that’s just lame), the other is that it is utterly depressing and hopeless, which I disagree with. Synecdoche, New York had almost the opposite effect on me. Yes, it deeply saddens me by the end of it, but not just out of shared empathy do I appreciate it, it also has improved my own life. Caden ended up becoming an asshole (not leaving the door open for the old man for instance) and died ultimately miserable, but I’m able to see those same flaws inside of myself (not the door one) and they are ones that Kaufman had probably seen in himself, and I’m able to learn from this and try and improve. I shouldn’t always be thinking about death, I shouldn’t always try to have this fake of intelligence to big myself up, I shouldn’t be worried about not creating art good enough. Hazel flew over Caden’s head the entire time, and it was only by ‘OK’ that it briefly had a conclusion, but he was only able to see the heartbreak in it, without seeing the momentary happiness and the brief glimpse of beauty.
