I AM WRITING A BOOK

Hello everyone! The word is out -- I am writing a book!

If you ever wanted to read a book about McMansions, 5-over-1s, the ignoble toil of architects, ridiculous baubles for rich people, hostile architecture, private equity, shopping (rip), offices (rip), loud restaurants, and starchitects who behave like tech founders, this is the book for you!

Thank you all for your support throughout the years -- without you this would not be possible. And don't worry, I'll still be blogging throughout it all, so stay tuned for this month's post.

Congratulations! Already excited to preorder!

Colleen McMillian

Yay - I've been waiting and waiting!

Wade Staddon

That is awesome! Can't wait to read.

Ricky Burns

Hell yeah!

Congratulations, Kate! I've learned so much from your blog over the years -- when I see a hideous house, I can now articulate exactly why I hate it so much. Your sense of humor, keen eye and deep knowledge of architecture will make this a must-read. PS: totally love the title.

Really looking forward to this! When I lived near Harvard Square, I had one housemate who was going to Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, Between him and a childhood friend who’d gone there, I got a sense of why the field turns out so many starchitects (and wannabes): an emphasis on Making a Bold Statement rather than, say, modest but well-designed buildings that fulfilled their functions well and were adaptable - you know, a good user experience. (I think I grok why you’re comparing starchitects to Silicon Valley techbros.) My friend would show me some flashy, angular building in a brochure and say, This won all sorts of awards, and my first thought was, Yeah, but does it serve its occupants’ needs well? It’s nice to be pretty and/or striking from an artistic PoV, but you’re supposed to be designing something that works, as well, not just some giant piece of sculpture. (MIT’s Media Lab building is an example of “looks nice, but actually works against its occupants’ needs”, in this case, to congregate and collaborate.)

Kai Matthews

I’m looking forward to reading it!

Awesome! Looking forward to it. I started working in the construction industry in the US as a project manager a couple years ago and living this crap day to day just radicalizes me more and more lol. Basically every new construction project is built as cheap as possible by foreign investors. It's bleak. There is no humanity or soul in our cities and it's drying up faster and faster.

It is said that everyone has a book in them, may yours be delivered with all due haste!

Great to hear! I’m also writing a book. For a year already! And it’s a hell of a job. So good luck, I’m rooting for you!
