A Quick Life Update

Just writing to say I’m doing okay and am trying hard to take care of myself and use this moment to reflect on everything and improve on myself and what I do. I’m taking a break to reevaluate what I want In Praise of Shadows to be at this time – which is primarily to focus on less frequent but more highly polished, well researched, and professional horror videos rather than the monthly uploads that I’ve been doing lately which I had clearly at times let become unfocused and sloppy. I definitely regret how I handled some aspects of my last video and I see this next one as a chance to redeem myself and show people what I’m really capable of. Because of this, the previously posted schedule for the year will be changing. Those projects will still happen down the road, but right now I want to take this opportunity to showcase the kinds of videos that I am absolutely best at and to change my priority to some of those big bucket list videos that I’ve talked about making in the past. So, here’s the new plan: I’m currently working on a career retrospective of a filmmaker, examining all thirteen of their movies with an extensive biographical look at their life. After that I’m diving right into a multi-video series on the history of werewolves in the same style that I previously used with witches. Hope you all are well. I’m really glad to hear the experience hasn’t turned you off of doing videos because I would hate to lose your voice. Super excited to hear about a history of werewolves, that’s incredible. Recently rewatched the Witch videos and they’re still some of my fav YT content I will mimic what some others have said, and that you couldn’t possibly make everyone happy, although I understand this particular set of fans came after you in a rabid way. Really glad to hear you’re focusing in on what you want the channel to be. I know I’m constantly reevaluating what I want my writing or podcast to be. It’s always a good sign from a creator. 2024-07-10 03:48:29 +0000 UTCThanks! And good luck with your films, I edit on Final Cut but I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s a great software but it’s pretty expensive. It’s what I was taught on in school when I was studying to become an editor for film and tv which is originally what I mainly wanted to do at the time. I know there are cheaper options that are just as good from what I’ve heard, but I’ve never used another software so I can’t really give any advice with that. I’ve just always stuck with Final Cut because I know how to use it and didn’t want to have to relearn a whole new program.

You could be that guy who messed up big that one time buuuuut... apologized, learned his lesson, owned up to what he did like a man, and became better for it. You messed up big and no one will give you a chance to redeem your self or see what your capable of until they're convinced you truly understand that and deserve another chance. You need to make amends before you want to go through with any of these future projects. Normally if it was a small mistake best thing would be to make a small apology on twitter or something and focus on the content and move on but in your case you screwed so big thats not gonna cut it. You need to make a meaningful apology video, tail between your legs (no crying or dramatics though) and genuinely apologize for being an idiot to everyone. It really is as simple as that.

It’ll create more incidents like the failed hit piece video, though, which has already lead to him being a laughingstock in the wider youtube sphere. If he wants any amount of genuine success, he should take in criticism, whether he likes the people it's coming from or not. Again, surrounding himself solely with people who have no interest in giving him brutally honest feedback is probably what led him into this situation. Do you want his spiraling to continue?

You can try to make a literalist argument but you and I both know that it would be in bad faith. This weird thing happens to me psychologically when I make a video on something where I stay with one subject for weeks or a couple months at a time and burn myself on it. So often me making a video on something plays out with that being my last exposure to that media, which happened with Batman unfortunately. I haven’t really read any new Batman comics since making that except for maybe two? But I still love that world and would definitely be down to check those out.

I actually rewatched your Batman/World Of Gothic Horror video earlier today and I was wondering - have you checked out any of the "One Bad Day" Batman comics that have been coming out? They all have a different flavour and some aren't as gothic as others, but they do in my opinion do a pretty neat job of providing each villain with a proper standalone story.

It and many other videos about Midsommar or The lighthouse made me realize that as a person who grew up watching lot's of Scooby Doo I much prefer analyzing horror and tropes (or comedy horror lol) rather than cheap flick. Clearly the inconsistent nature of Youtube video performance is taxing to your mental health and I'd hate to see you taken to a dark place again because of something that is outside of your control. I love your videos but clearly something within the algorithm doesn't want to give you much reach, that is a dangerous place to be in when you tie so much of yourself to your work. To be clear I don't think you should give up Youtube, I just think it would be better for you to be in a place where you can continue to support yourself even when a video doesn't perform as well as you'd hope. Obviously this is all up to you. I don't know your personal circumstances so you will need to do what works best for you. Again I love your work and I hope you can keep your chin up through these dark times.

I know it might not seem like the best time to do it, but I would gladly pay for a higher tier in exchange for literally nothing. Just call it “Pay My Rent Tier” at $5 and keep the $1 basic tier. Make it clear the patrons get nothing in exchange for the higher tier, other than knowing you’re able to keep doing this and hopefully take some stress off your back.
