First Two Chapters of the next video

So, as it turns out I was much more productive than I thought that I would be and the new video on conservatives in horror will actually be out this coming weekend. It is four chapters long and each one covers a very different topic. I've had a lot of fun making this one, and I really hope you like it!
For the purposes of secrecy and having the video's intended response to happen I will need to keep the subjects of chapter three and four a secret until the day of release, but here are the first two chapters early. Also, I would appreciate it if nobody who are mentioned in these sections knows about this because I would like to keep this video more or less quiet until it comes out. I've actually never been this nervous before with a video project, chapter three and in particular chapter four became very difficult subjects to cover and there will be a pretty significant amount of people online who I fear will be very upset at me I think for talking about this. But I think this is important. This next week should at the very least be interesting.

2024-05-26 19:07:43 +0000 UTCI've been off Twitter for a while and had no clue about the Hills Have Eyes video controversy, and I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I know it's probably impossible to a degree when your platform gets to a certain size, but I do hope you can find a way to block out the haters and trolls who have no interest in intellectually engaging with your work, and you're able to focus on making content that you find fulfilling. That said, I also hope videos on "youtube drama" don't become more of a trend, because that can really drag down a good channel, and I'd hate to see it happen to one of my favorites. I get the need to go after Wendigoon as a right-wing version of what you do, but when you have to do a lot of "he said/she said" it gets muddy and can feel petty. Not to in any way defend those people, but I think taking down people like Jason Blum are way more worth the effort than a few shitty Youtubers. Mean this with all love and respect. PS your section on Late Night with the Devil did help change my neutral stance on AI in that film, so thanks for that. AI images really have no place outside of memes and shitposts anymore.

You're 100% right and I'd be repeating a ton of people already if I mentioned all of what I like, but I'm halfway in and this is so, so well written and my heart breaks for you Zane. You deserve far better than you've gotten. And as a Tsalagi out of NC you've never come off anti-native. You've always treated our community with kindness. Edit: The only fault you made in this video is the Sneako-sourced information, which in a 3 and a half hour long video isn't out of the ordinary or unforgivable. Hell, even Wendigoon himself admits it. I think he's tried to be better than he was but that also isn't enough. And ultimately I cannot support him based on the company he keeps and the fanbase he curates, let alone with some of the foul things he's said in the past. His fans are the sort of people that would call me slurs and wish violence upon me and I don't think he's done enough self reflection as to why that might be the case. Like you said, horror is punk, and punks have to tell nazi punks to fuck off. Otherwise we just enable their cruelty and fascism. You can't be a bystander.

I have had almost the exact conversation with my partner for a while and was never able to properly articulate how I felt like horror refused to criticize itself. Partner and I left late night with the devil thinking we had lost our minds because we didn’t understand how it was getting such rave reviews. Made me feel a little more sane. I love work from a lot of the people you covered participating in this and I hope your video at least inspires one of them to stop taking Jason Blum’s money. What a hack.

2024-05-25 15:31:03 +0000 UTCI know you said you don’t look at YT comments anymore, so I’ll just copy and paste it here: I feel like I've been waiting for someone to make this video for a long time, I regularly talk with friends and my partner about the insidious creep of conservative voices in the horror world. Concerning the reception of the Hills Have Eyes vid, I think there's alot of trouble people have in listening to criticism of a nuanced basis. I watch your videos (and others) from a purely subjective perspective. Even if I disagree with something a video says, that doesn't make it somehow false. I think appreciating horror especially comes with specific requirements to be critical because of the conservative philosophy that sneaks in and the rough track record of horror cinema in general. I often have to consider horror movies by a different standard than other films, because there's such a hit/miss track record of films. So loving horror also comes with a need to be critical and nuanced. So, the idea that someone would watch a video, disagree with the assertions or interpretations in that video and then reject the author of the video seems ridiculous to me. I get that people tend to have no filter online and be particularly harsh, but there's no need to react so harshly against those people like yourself that are making content that is challenging and interesting, and for the most part to no cost of the viewer. Personally, I’ve always looks at things like class and socioeconomics in my analysis of Horror. I once got in a huge argument with someone by implying Bloodborne had progressive messages at it’s heart, that was a doozy. Anyway, I appreciate your interesting voice when it comes to horror and regret you got so much hate for an interpretation of the Hills Have Eyes vid. Also, in my experience, there's this weird brand of fandom that is all about being the loud discrediting voice. I write SCP stuff (eventually hopefully to be published) and there's this HUGE section of SCP fandom that is always coming in with the adage of "This is no good now, why is it all woke?" and "Why can't you all just write monsters anymore?" and overall saying the quality of SCP has somehow come down in the last ten years. And I am completely sure that the vast majority of people repeating this complaint a) weren't around for the early days of SCP and b) never really read them anyway. So, lots of people coming in to say "why can't you do the videos you used to do" and clearly never realizing your criticism has always been political in nature, really makes sense. I know it's easy to say "don't pay attention to those people" but god... your videos are wonderful and I hope you continue, and hope this downward trend goes away and your numbers start picking up again.

The internet is a cancerous place and the way that people were able to point outrage at you like a flashlight for others to follow is ridiculous. Your channel showed me how to enjoy horror films. Unironically I just kind of hated the genre for most of my life until someone with reading comprehension explained their language to me. I'll try to keep this short but I just wanted to be one of the people saying thank you for what you make and your art is worthy and important.

In fact, I know it opened my eyes to certain aspects of the film I missed. It's like having a conversation with a buddy who gives a different perspective, and I love that. I'm a director, so I know how it feels to have something you've poured your heart into get misconstrued and picked apart. I understand that once I put my art out into the world that it's out of my hands, but it doesn't mean the negative comments don't hurt. I may not always agree with your opinion Zane, but I for damn sure haven't felt that you deserve all the hate and vitriol you've received. There are only a couple of Patreon's that I subscribe to due to money issues, but I haven't regretted giving you my hard earned cash once. If I could give you more money I would, because I appreciate your thoughtfulness and how thorough you are with each essay. I know it's easier said than done, but don't give up. We have your back.

I always gravitated towards your videos even from the return to Oz one because of your politics. I always appreciate when you call out art or a creator for sexist/homophobic/racist depictions, it feels very honest and transparent. It sucks to say but it's kind of just the trash taking itself out, which isn't great when you need to make a living but hopefully it fosters a more accepting leftist community over time

I obviously don't know if he's discussed or mentioned in this at all, but are you aware of the latest Richard Stanley news as it's similar to the Kevin Spacey situation? I haven't read the details yet but apparently Stanley got cleared of wrongdoing and that the accuser is facing perjury charges. Just thought I'd bring this to your attention since we were all excited to see where his Lovecraft trilogy would go before those allegations came out. I'm really sorry if this is way off topic from your video. I'm just assuming it is related based on that Kevin Spacey Twitter post.
