A cool late-August breeze rolls through the suburbs, as the sun is almost past the horizon, the clacking of Robbie's new shoes against the wet concrete fill his ears as he runs down the sidewalk. An already drizzly and cloudy day has only moments ago taken a turn for the drizzlier. "Crap, crappy crap. I really hope Seth's got an umbrella." Robbie exclaims frantically to himself. It only seems like the rain is getting heavier the closer Robbie gets to Seth's house.
Finally, Robbie arrives on Seth's covered porch. Trying only now to catch his breath. "God... I am so fat. Fuck my life." Robbie leans on the bricks beside him, breathing the hardest he has in weeks. After a few moments, Robbie leans forward, he reaches beside Seth's barred front door for the doorbell and clicks it a few times. It isn't long before the rusty front door squeals and swings open, revealing a happy Seth. The smell of fresh rain on the grass and suburban concrete is momentarily replaced by a smell of cigarette smoke and mean old lady coming from within Seth's house. "Yeah --... yeah mom, I took out the trash. I'm gonna go -- I'm gonna go hang out with Robbie now. B-.... yeah. Bye."
Seth closes the door behind him. "Hey dude!! Did you get rained on?" Seth asked excitedly. "Hey!!! Nah... not very much at least. Though I ran pretty damn hard. Haven't felt that way since gym class. My everything hurts." Robbie responds with a defeated look in his face. Seth giggles, "Oh... yeah, I imagine so. Well, I brought you this." Seth hands Robbie a can of "SodaBoy Ultimate Root Beer" from his fridge, Robbie's most favorite drink. "Oh my god... I love you so much dude." Robbie opens the can, and takes a big swig. "Ahh-- That hits the spot."
Seth has a light chuckle, then turns to look at the escalating amount of rain around his porch. "So... you wanted to walk to the store right?" said Seth, Robbie too turns to look at the ever increasing onslaught of rain "Yeah! I was gonna ask -- you have an umbrella right?", Seth nervously looks to Robbie "Oh... I... I don't. I think my mom's cat tore up our last one."
"Oh... well that sucks." Robbie says while smiling. The certain kind of bunched up smile when someone realizes that the entire day's plans are ruined. "Yeah... sorry. Hmm... sucks there's really nothing to do in my house either." Seth says with defeat in his voice as well. There is a momentary silence that follows as they both are trying to think of what to do, standing in the limited porch space. Seth turns to Robbie "I mean, we could still go. Walking in the rain is fun. I'd do it."
"Uhh... I dunno. I really don't wanna get cold and wet. I did sprint like a race horse to get here so I wouldn't have to be either of those things." Robbie puts straightforwardly. "That's fair. Well, we could just sit here and hang out and watch the rain. I like the sound of that too." Seth takes the initiative to walk next to where Robbie is standing, and sit down on his porch against the wall. Robbie stares at him for but a moment. "Okay. Let's do that then." Robbie crouches where he stands, and leans on the wall as he shifts his feet out from under him. And plants himself close to Seth.
The two boys spent over an hour, talking about people they know from school, video games, and what they want for dinner. Enjoying each other's company, and enjoying the sounds, sights and smells of the rain together, as the sky and environment takes on a pleasing dim bluish hue.
Unlike the rain, which has only grown more fierce, conversation does eventually die down. Suddenly, Seth gains some sort of diabolical demeanor, a smug look on his face. Seth turns his head just enough where he can see Robbie out of the corner of his eye, as he's facing forward watching the rain, lost in his thoughts. Seth looks at him like that for a few moments, and suddenly his smile grows even bigger. Seth suddenly stands up, breaking Robbie out of his trance and taking his attention. Seth stands at the edge of his porch. "Woah! Robbie! Do you see this? Come here! It's crazy!" Robbie, suddenly very interested, stands up and starts to walk Seth's direction.
Robbie, now standing next to Seth, looks around for what he could be talking about "What? What is it? I don't see it..." Suddenly Seth leaps out into the pouring rain, landing in front of his porch, turns and grabs ahold of Robbie's wrist with both his hands and starts to tug on him with all his might "GET OUT HERE! We're walking in the rain whether you like it or not!!" Seth yells while bursting with laughter. Robbie quickly strengthens his stance on the porch, trying to resist Seth's pull. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Robbie yells, but can't help but also burst out laughing.
Both of the boys are locked in a tug of war for a moment, laughing very hard. Robbie's laughter causes his strong stance to eventually give out, Seth successfully pulls him out from under the porch, but his body weight is too much for Seth to stop. Robbie falls and takes Seth down with him into the wet muddy grass besides them. They're laughing even harder now. "WOW you jerk." Robbie says with his eyes tightly closed from how much he's losing it.
They lay there for a few moments trying to stop giggling and catching their breath, absolutely soaked to the bone and covered in mud. Seth looks at Robbie and watches him laugh for a few moments, feeling extremely pleased with himself. Seth finally finds the strength to stand back up. He turns to Robbie and extends his hand with that Seth brand smile on his face. Okay, now that THAT's done, you ready to go?
