Not sure the hate this film is getting. It isn't going to be as good as the first two, but it is definitely the third/fourth best in the franchise. Enjoyable to watch.

Ha, I had a similar "dad running into the room with a movie" story, except it was to watch Friday.

This is what I was hoping reaction shots would be! I don't care if you pick a movie that I love, like lord of the rings, and tear it apart. I just want opinions, reviews, conversation about a single movie! I want many, many more of these! If this continues I think I found my new favorite EZA show :)!!!!

I agree with a lot of the complaints about characters doing foolish things but it doesn't bother me at all. There's a lot of good ideas in the film, it looks great, had a good score. I can't just write it off entirely. I think people complained that Prometheus didn't have enough of the horror so they doubled down on that a bit. Or tried to. And they misled their horror after 70's/80's horror movie tropes. A lot of the characters' deaths resulting from bad decisions, walking away from the main group, having sex in the shower, etc, felt like old school horror to me. Maybe that was a misunderstanding of what people wanted and a lack of understanding how the genre has changed over the years. I enjoy the philosophical side of things a lot. Everything with David and his experiments fascinates me. It's more compelling to me than "oh, they're just scary space bugs." It gives you interesting things to think about. I think it's more cohesive than Prometheus too, which felt like two separate movies to me. I agree that a lot of the "dumb" things in this movie would have been easily fixable, which is frustrating, but I still like this movie a lot more than the alternative. I think 3 and 4 showed that there isn't much you could do with the series as it was post Aliens (granted, I think 3 is far better than most people do). If you're going to bring the series back, do something new and exciting with it. I feel like they're doing a decent job of that. They just need to have an outside party or two read over their scripts. Lol. I hope poor performance doesn't prevent me from getting to see where this story ends. I'm dying to know what the deal is with that Engineer ship loaded with eggs on LV 426. Is Origae 6 actually LV 426? Are those colonists on that ship actually residents of Hadley's Hope? Is that way, 50 or so odd years later Weyland Yutani "built" a colony there despite the warnings stuplet sent at the end of Alien? Did Walter steal an engineer ship loaded with alien eggs to chase after David and crash on that planet? Is that where that ship came from? Was that pilot actually an android then, who got infected? Did that actually birth the queen explaining why the later aliens have a more mechanoid look.... I can go on. That's why I love this stuff. It gets my juices flowing. It's like a creative exercise for me. I don't know. I love it. Lol

The chest burster scene seemed like a parody of Spaceballs' parody of Alien's chest bursting scene. You could also liken it to a twisted Pinocchio and Geppetto.

Valid criticisms, characters didn't act reasonably in some situations, the quarantine scene especially, however that didn't bring me out of the movie as much as it seems it did both of you. I feel the good outweighed the bad. This movie made Prometheus a better movie. However, I do have a weird complaint, a strange overlooked detail. Daniels stabs David with her Franco nail before the David/Walter fight, on the bottom of his chin. So while yes, you don't see the conclusion of the David/Walter fight, it's pretty much assumed that David being the evil genius that he is, has taken Walter's identity. But you're not 100% sure, the android is pretty set on helping Daniels out in destroying the alien, and the camera work at this point has yet to show the android's chin, so it still could be Walter. Once the alien is ejected out into space though, the android leans back from the monitor with a sigh of relief, revealing NO STAB WOUND. It's Walter, at least, it should be. I feel it was very deliberate, not showing the bottom of the chin until that moment, or maybe it was just a sloppy, overlooked detail that they didn't feel was important enough to include, which bums me out, or perhaps there is some crazy theory out there that explains it away, but still, COME ON. Overall as a sequel to Prometheus, 9/10. As a stand alone movie, 8.5/10.

I absolutely loved it, think it's easily Ridley Scott's best film since Black Hawk Down in my view. Michael Fassbender's performance made the film for me, absolutely spellbinding in it, a truly chilling, insidious performance. Honestly think it was a nigh-on Oscar worthy performance in my view. Loved Katherine Waterston as Dany too, perfect for the role, only slight negative was the finale which I felt was a tad rushed (but the actual ending after fantastically well done and suitably ominous) but the rest of the film is truly incredible. Can see why some wouldn't like it though, if you wanted an Alien film in the originals mould (stuck on a space ship/station with an Alien) then I can see how you could be disappointed. But for me personally, this was a much fresher, more original film than repeating the Alien/Alien 3 setup again. Also want to mention the music, love the sparse, mysterious interludes with sometimes classical nods to the original film.

Awesome video. You might win me over with the movie reviews after all, but save it for these culturally-significant series. I share a lot of the same feelings about the movie. A lot of it made little sense, but there were a few amazing moments. I'm wondering if the blu ray will have some deleted scenes that can explain some of the bs. I don't feel I should give Ridley my money for the blu ray, but I already have every other mainline Alien movie + Prometheus.. :|

I hated this movie so much. I love Alien and having this as an origin story cheapens and kind of ruins my love for the creature. It looks pretty, but OMFG the argument is terrible, beyond mediocre. And the flare scene, literally the whole cinema room chuckled.

I really enjoyed your spoiler talk! Hope to see more of them in the future for both movies and perhaps tv-show? :) I was disappointed in the movie myself after seeing it, but couldn't entirely put it to words what was wrong, but your insight was about a lot of the same frustrations I had... I didn't care for the cast, and I thought they made one stupid move after the other... Most horror movies do this, but it's really annoying considering how good the first movies in the series are. Have you seen the two prequel web-episodes for Covenant? They were released before the movie came out as advertising. Found them after I had watched the movie (because I don't see any trailer anymore, since trailers are so long and show so much), and I thought they really should have been part of the movie itself. This felt like the PR-team took something out of the movie, just to promote it... And I do think it's good to make ads/small prequels instead of big trailers that spoil the movie, but at the same time, I felt that they were essential to the story, in a movie that has so very little story in itself. The prequels is called Alien: Covenant - Prologue: The Crossing and Alien: Covenant - Prologue: Last Supper and are available on youtube. L&R! :)

Loved this video. I saw Alien Covenant the first night of release and I agree with all of your statements. I would give it 1 thumb up 1 thumb down. Anyway! you guys should do this again for another movie that you two are looking forward to. do you think you can do it live tho? and maybe have a section at the end where you talk with chat and answer questions about the themes and points of the movie?

Guys, I think nobody liked it. I mean, they totally killed the movie focusing on the Creator... two battles vs aliens so far... no. I will go back for AvP then calling this an "Alien Movie". :(

First Grate show, please more of these! (Under the skin!) I'm with you, really disappointed. Another Dumb decision Monday of a film. I found the complete panicked brake down of the pilot character to be really insulting. It was akin to 1950s scream queen moments of complete functional collapse. Just not believable of a character that had just piloted through an intense storm, & who had presumably had some training. She and the others were after all responsible FOR 2000 LIVES!!

I am so thankful that all the issues I had with the movie were addressed here. I saw the movie with friends so we had a very frustrated tearing apart of this movie on the ride home and came to all the same conclusions. Covenant was Prometheus 2.0 all the bad parts were worse and the good parts were great. The lack of spacesuits/breathers in this movie was alarming. The whole movie hinged on this being the most incompetent group of scientists to even exist. It was insulting and it was SO EASY to fix. In Prometheus they had the little mapping drones... they have complex androids that are virtually indistinguishable from human beings... but they don't have robots they could send down to a planet to take samples and map the topography? It's painful. Including drones that map the areas, start taking samples, and just don't pick up on the mutagen would cut the stupidity of the crew in half. It would be a 2 second fix, we wouldn't even need to see it, just have the characters say something like "The scout drones are relaying analysis, looks like we're good to go down." and suddenly they're not the worst scientists to ever get sent into space, they were just too reliant on trusting technology to keep them safe, which would mesh so well with the relationship between humans and androids in this universe! The Engineer settlement getting wiped out also bothered me a lot. Didn't they establish in Prometheus that the planet where the mutagen was being designed had been abandoned, we can assume for thousands of years? They knew not to go to that planet, they made warnings not to go there, but in those thousands of years their space travel technology apparently never advanced to the point that this ancient ship is still compatible with this hub? They apparently had no designation between their ships? Why were they celebrating the return of a vessel that had been abandoned at the site of a biowepon testing facility thousands of years ago? They should have been absolutely terrified! The alternative is that it is intentional because this was seen in Prometheus too, the opening scene implies that their technology/physiology hasn't evolved for billions of years. Maybe not an oversight but certainly unrealistic.

I have just given up on this series. Alien is one of my favorite films of all time. For me Aliens destroyed all potential for the franchise to be something special, while itself being a great action film. It just changed the alien so much from the original thjat even James Cameron said that its basically a new creature... :( But I also understand that a film like Alien with such intense and disturbing sexual themes and such a strong ambiguity about the creature (Why does it behave differently towards the male and female crew of Nostromo?) cannlot be done in such a desexualized culture and one that craves for clear and simple explanations/solutions. Too bad, but the good thing is that the old films still exist^^ I just wish such a great director had a better eye for scripts or could have done something with O'Bannon again :(
